I generally dislike flats, but the fibers in this let me do long strokes, and the shape is such that I tend to do blocky shapes which really add something to what I am working on. I really like having the travel brush as well when I am out and about without my full kit.Īnother goto brush has been the escoda versatil flat wash 1/2″.

This would give you good variety, and these brushes work well for watercolor. These which have a #8 and a #12, and a travel round in #10. ( I also have a versatil Rigger – which is just a round with longer brush portion, which gives you less control, longer strokes, and more expressive quality )Įscoda has a signature set for 40, the Zbukvic set #1, which has Perla synthetic brushes. Its not going to do washes as well as the Quill ( it does not have a good belly, nor can you use the side of it in the same way ). The #8 round in contrast is all about control. At the same time it’s a bit floppy and the brush itself is rather long, which lends itself towards being expressive and making interesting shapes I didn’t plan on. My #18 round cannot handle nearly the same level of detail as it’s tip is relatively dull. I first go in with a Neptune #4 quill (which is the size of a #16 round), it not only does washes, but has a sharper tip than a same sized round with similar fibers. The versatil (very good synthetic almost like kolinsky ) are about the same price as the reserva ( real kolinsky sable ) in the small sizes, but as you get larger they don’t go up in price as fast. The Reserva #8 is about 20-25 while it jumps up to 30-50 for sizes above that.

If I had only one quality brush I’d probably want an Escoda Versatil #10 or #12 though mainly so I could do washes with it (even though I might go with a Quill instead ).
